THE MOST FAMOUS WINES FROM TUSCANY
Bolgheri Sassicaia
Sassicaia Tenuta San Guido 2015 was considered in 2018 the best Wine of the year by Wine Spectator. It is produced with french grapes Cabernet Sauvignon 85% and Cabernet Franc 15% in a region where Sangiovese is the main grape. It is the result of a great intuition of the marquis Incisa della Rocchetta who planted some Bordeaux Grapes in a rocky soil. Sassicaia in fact in Italian means rocks, stones. It is the only Italian wine to have an own DOC classificazione for a single vineyard. Before it got a DOC classification, the wine was an IGT and called Super Tuscan by an american journalist.
Brunello di Montalcino
Brunello from Montalcino. The name Brunello, that means in Italian brown, comes from its particular red/brown colour. It is made with 100% Sangiovese Grapes and it is aged for at least 3 years even if this Wine gives its best after 6/7 years. In 1980 the Brunello was awarded the first DOCG Wine in Italy. The founding of the Brunello di Montalcino is due to the Biondi Santi family. The Italian president served a Brunello 1955 during a lunch with Queen Elizabeth. The riserva Brunello 1955 was Awarded by wine spectator among the 12 best wines of the century (only Italian wine)
Tignanello
Tignanello is another famous Super Tuscan which has been awarded many times by the prestigious Magazine Wine Spectator. Whereas the Sassicaia is made only with French grapes, Tignanello is made also with the Sangiovese, the most common Italian grape. It was the first Sangiovese wine to be aged in barrique barrels. It was also the first wine in the Chianti Area to not contain white grapes, but international grapes. Probably the name Tignanello is coming from Tinia, the Etruscan Juppiter.
Chianti Classico
Chianti is probably the most famous Italian Red Wine. Chianti is the hilly region between Florence and Siena. The first Wine area called Chianti is attested in 1716. Today the Chianti has 7 subregions. The Wine produced in the original Area is called Chianti Classico and is labelled with the typical Black Rooster (gallo nero in Italian). Nobile di Montepulciano
Vino Nobile di Montepulciano is one of the oldest Wines in Italy. It is quoted as Nobile di Montepulciano since 789 AD. It is made with Sangiovese Grape, known in this area as Prugnolo Gentile, mixed with other local grapes.
Morellino di Scansano
Morellino di Scansano is produced in the Maremma Region in the area of Scansano. Morellino is the local name for the Sangiovese grape due to the dark color of the grapes. It is the last DOCG wine declared in Tuscany. It has a round flavor, there are less tannins comparing with Brunello or Nobile di Montepulciano because it is aged for less time in barrels.
Vernaccia di San Gimignano
Vernaccia di San Gimignano is a White Wine produced in the area of San Gimignano between Siena, Florence and Pisa. San Gimignano is a Jewel of the Middle Ages and can be considered the modern New York. The Towers of this little Village are in fact as modern Skyscrapers. The Vernaccia has a characterizing acidity and a bouquet with notes of yellow fruits.
Vin Santo
Vin Santo is a dessert Wine produced with dried Grapes. The dried grapes are vinified during the Easter week, probably this is the reason why the name is Vin Santo, Holy wine. Another legend tells that a monk during the middle ages used to give this Holy Wine to Plague Victims, therefore its name. The third legend refers to a monk who said: this is a wine from Xantum, a greek city. The people understood Santo instead of Xantum, the greek city. Many families in Tuscany are having Vin Santo and Cantucci after the meal. Cantucci are almonds biscuits.
