Civita di Bagnoregio is also called the “dying city” because it was built on a tuff hill and the edges of the hill are slowly slowly falling down. In the small village are living only 11 inhabitants but there are tourist attractions, bars and restaurants to enjoy this wonderful pearl in the Tuscia Region.
The bridge and the Santa Maria gate
The bridge is one of the most iconic symbols of Civita. It was built in modern times after the German soldiers destroyed it during world war 2. It is the only way to reach the dying city. The only gate is the gate dedicated to Santa Maria. On the gate there are two stone lions holding two heads, which represents the victory of the local people against the Monaldeschi, rival family from Orvieto.

The piazza is the lounge of Civita di Bagnoregio. The main square is located on top of the ancient roman forum. Colomns from the ancient city are inside the church and ancient fragments are visible on the bell tower. In the square takes place the donkey palio on the first Sunday of June and the second Sunday of September.

Every corner in Civita di Bagnoregio is like a postcard. We highly recommend to see the Renaissance palaces of the family Colasanti, the oldest family from Civita, the palace Bocca and Alemanni. In the palace Alemanni is also the geological museum of the landslides. Interesting are the staircases outside the brick palaces, typical of the style from Viterbo.

You can find typical delicacies from the Tuscia Area such as wildboar, mushrooms, truffle, chestnuts, hazelnuts. Among the pasta specialties is the Pici, home made pasta, called in this area Piciarielli.
